Quite a gloom was cast over our little community at the latter end of last week when the news became public that Jeremiah Crowley—an old hand here— had committed suicide by blowing off his head with dynamite. No other cause can be assigned for the deed than that deceased’s mind was deranged. From particulars gleaned from his intimate acquaintances it seems that he had meditated the deed for some time, but no one had any suspicion that the threats he had made to do away with himself had any serious meaning attached to them.
Deceased, who was in the employ of the Pendinnie Gold Mining Company, went to work as usual last Wednesday, and did not return to the place he was boarding at, Mr Webb’s hotel. Not having turned up on Thursday a search party was formed, and the body with the head blown completely away, was found about half way between his work and the town. The hands were also frightfully shattered, as if deceased had held them up to his face after placing the dynamite in his mouth. The body was quickly removed to Mr Webb’s hotel, where it lay until the police arrived. An inquiry was held on Saturday, and a verdict of suicide was recorded. The funeral on Saturday afternoon was largely attended, four of deceased’s mates acting as pall bearers. Mr J. P. Flynn read the burial service, and the coffin, which was nicely decorated with wreaths of white everlasting flowers, was laid in its last resting-place.
