Youanmi is an abandoned goldfields townsite located 570 km north east of Perth and 90 km south west of Sandstone. Gold was discovered in the area in 1896, but was of insufficient richness to warrant being developed. The area was rediscovered in 1908, and by 1910 there were sufficient miners in the area for the “Youanme Progress Committee” to request a townsite be declared. Following the survey of lots the townsite was gazetted in August 1910, but was spelled “Yuani”. This spelling was adopted because it was regarded as the correct spelling of this Aboriginal name, and Youanme was a local corruption. However, it was soon realised that the gazetted spelling would lead to the name being mispronounced, and in December 1910 it was changed to the current spelling, Youanmi. The “mi” at the end of the name is pronounced as in “me”. Another spelling recorded for the name is “Euanni”, and “Coorang” is also recorded as an alternative Aboriginal name for the area.

The name was first recorded for a spring in the area by a surveyor in 1887, the name having been given to the surveyor by an old Aboriginal accompanying him. The meaning of the name is uncertain, one source advising it actually means “you and me”, although this is unlikely. Other sources suggest it relates to a type of mulga trees located around the spring or the bob tailed goanna, the Aboriginal name of which is “Youan” or “Uan”.

“Microbe.”

He was a peculiar looking man, medium height, long-legged, and hunched-back. His voice was squeaky, and high pitched, and he could do anything but he liked being a cook best of all. He had wandered around the Eastern Fields for a long time, and he was getting full of it. He would like to get some job where he could settle down for a bit. He didn’t care what it was. His proper name was John Morgan, but he was always called “Microbe.” Every-one called him that, and he took no offence.
For a long time Microbe kept a shanty on the Sandstone-Youanmi road. It was a neat little place, kept beautifully clean and in summer time well sprinkled with water, and, therefore, a godsend to the weary wayfarer. As he did not interfere with the trade of legitimate liquor sellers, he was not molested.

Obituary – WILLIAM (BILLY) WATSON

Word was received early on Saturday morning last of the death, at Youanmi the previous evening, of William Watson, eldest son of Mr and Mrs William Watson, of this town. No details are to hand, but it appears that deceased promised to lend a rifle to a friend to go kangaroo shooting about 6 :30 on Friday evening, and about that time deceased went to his room, evidently to get the rifle, and almost immediately on entering, an explosion was heard, the rifle having gone off, probably when being taken from behind the bed, the bullet going through deceased’s head and lodging in the corner of the room. An inquiry was held. Deceased was a returned soldier and with bis brother, Charlie, bad recently taken up pastoral country south of Youanmi. He spent his boyhood days in Mt. Magnet and enlisted for active service abroad after the great war started and was wounded at Gallipoli. Sincere sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents and family.
