Widgiemooltha Inquest – Verdict of Accidental Death Jury Commends Rescuers

The inquest on Raymond Jeffery Brown, who received fatal injuries on May 25 at the Mount Mine at Widgiemooltha, when he and B. Gilbert were overcome by fumes, was concluded on Tuesday before Mr. P. A. Moran, J.P. (acting coroner) and a jury. The Coroner returned a verdict that Raymond Jeffery Brown came by his death as a result of a fractured skull caused by his falling down a shaft when overcome by fumes, and that no blame is attachable to anyone.
The jury added a rider —”That the jury is of the opinion that the three men, Ernest Albert Cooper, George Sawyer and Norman Allan, who assisted in saving the life of Gilbert and in bringing Brown to the surface, should be commended for their heroic effort.

Death of Pioneer –  The death occurred on July 13, in St. John of God Hospital, Kalgoorlie, where she had resided for the past five years, of Mary, relict of the late James Doyle. Deceased was the first white woman to settle in Widgiemooltha, where she had lived since her marriage in 1898, assisting her husband to run Doyle’s Hotel until they sold out in 1932. James Doyle died in 1933 and the three children born to them died in infancy. Mrs. Doyle leaves one brother and two sisters, residing in Victoria. Her funeral took place on Sunday July 15, in the Widgiemoaltha cemetery.
