The Sun – goldfields newspapers

The Sun Newspaper was circulated  in the Goldfields from 1898 to 1929 when the name was changed to The Goldfields Observer, which continued until 1939. Printed and published by Frank Walker for Kalgoorlie Newspapers, Ltd at their office,  51 Forrest-street, Kalgoorlie next to the Railway Hotel.

The Sunday Times and “The Sun” newspapers in Western Australia. “The Sunday Times” was originally published in 1897 by Mr. F. C. B. Vosper who maintained control until his death, his family later selling to Messrs. James M. Smith and A. Read, proprietors of “The Kalgoorlie Sun”. “The Sun” was a weekly newspaper published in Kalgoorlie on Sundays.

The newspaper was very popular and had a reputation of printing the more ‘human’ side of the news. At one stage it published the following headline:-

    Hi Moya do you have names for the chaps in the photo – the chap in the front with the white jacket I have seen him in various photos from around that time. Are these newspapers available to view anywhere – thank you for all the work you do on this site Cheers Jan McKinlay
