Some months ago, when looking at my records for Kanowna and in particular, the honour board for WW1, which survives today in remarkable condition at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder War Museum. I thought how interesting it would be to see if I could find out the details of all the men listed which only had a surname and initial on the board.
This is still a work in progress, but I thought you might like to see what I have done so far. The names in red are the ones that I have not been able to find out the details about as yet. The problem is that they are common names and to be on the roll you just had to have some connection to Kanowna and not necessarily live there at the time. Some were born there and others married there. Others had this address for their next of kin, usually a parent or wife. Often as well their full name was not the name they were known by, which make its difficult.
Of these 37 names – I have done my best, but I’m sure there will be errors and omissions so if you can add or correct any details do let me know – resarch@outbackfamilyhistory.com.au

These deeds which should not pass away. Names that must not wither
The last Post sounded the soldier sleeps who died in honour.
Only those who have loved and lost, can understand wars bitter cost.
Oh for the touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice so still
When days are dark and friends are few,
My dear son, How I long for you…..
No dear one stood, beside him to hear his last farewell.
While he lies in silent sleep, his memory we will always keep

Hi Moira,
I enjoy reading many of your posts. I have just read the Kanowna Roll of Honour post – and found just a couple of editing typos:
“O’DONNELL H B – KIA – O’DONNELL Hugh Brian ‘Hughie’ – 11th Australian Infantry Battalion, KIA 12 May 1916 Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey aged 16yrs, Born 1898, Burt Street, Boulder Western Australia to John ‘Jack’ O’Donnell and Lily Elizabeth Dreyer, he joined the AIF in 1914 aged 16yrs, he is buried at the Lone Pine Cemetery.”
Should this one say he was aged 18 yrs when he was KIA? (Such a young age when he joined the Army to fight overseas.)
“ROBINSON W C – Wounded – ROBINSON William Chambers – Born 1868 Belfast Victori to William Thomas Chambers Robinson and Martha Watson, he married Annie Sophia Irwin in Victoria in 1903, she die in 1936 and he then re married Emma Louise Monkhouse in Perth Wa in the same year, he had one child, Joan Chambers born in 1916. He lived in Golconda St, Kanowna and he died in 1946 in Nedlands WA.”
(A ‘d’ is missing off the word ‘died in 1936; small ‘a’ in WA.)
Keep up the good work – little errors are so easy to make and not be noticed by the typist. I know … do them myself!!
Hi Prue Many thanks I will make these corrections.
Moya,
I did send you the details for Hugh O’Donnell some time ago. He was born 22.09.1898 so was 16 years and 8 months old when he enlisted but stated that he was 19 years and one month old. He was 17 years and 7 months old when he was killed. I thought I had sent you a scan of his birth certificate.
Thank you so much Sandra, I should have come to you first. (:
Awww thank you 🙂
