I think that Photographers are the people who have the least photographs of themselves. Mainly of course, because they are usually on the ‘other’ end of the lens. When I do happen to come across a photographers photo, I always take note. For example, the photo you will see below of Newman HALL. He was a very prolific photographer in the early Goldfields days and was half of the partnership of Hemus and Hall. The State library of WA have hundreds of his photos but not one of the man himself. When I was given a box of photos earlier this year, I was so pleased to find the photo below of Newman Hall. I scanned it of course, and then donated the original to State Library.
The following is a list of the photographer I have collected over the years. If you know of any errors or omission I would love to hear from you – research@outbackfamilyhistory.com.au

Without the dedicated work of our Goldfields photographs we would have to reply on descriptions of people and places. They not only offered a service to people to take photographs of loved ones, but they also were very prolific in taking photos of just about everything. Photographers also were quite mobile, and although they usually had a ‘studio’ they often travelled around, taking with them backdrops and props and of course cameras, to remote towns to take photographs for people who wouldn’t normally be able to have this done. So you may have a photo with the logo of the photographer as ‘H H Grose Boulder’ on the mat, but it may have been taken elsewhere.
Frank Martyn even worked for the police, taking photos of various crime scenes in Coolgardie before the police had their own photographers. He then was asked to give evidence in court.
As I see it, every photograph is a ‘Time Machine’ taking you back to that very moment in time that is captured forever in the shot. You only need to look into the eyes of a person in a photograph to see this is true!

Hi Moya, I am going thru Sydney Stuart Gore’s Army service records and found a lot of references for his work and the address for his “Vogue Studio” 64A Maritana Street, Kalgoorlie in 1942. Stuart was also a Freelance Photographer for the Western Australian newspaper, the Australian Broadcasting Commission Journal and was featured in the Western Australian Mining Journal 1938/39.
Hi Mariellen Thank you for that detail, I have now been able to add this photographer to my list as I didn’t have that name before. I see from the advertisements that it was also a ‘Dance Studio’ as well as a photographer.
