The Carriers Picnic – Mystery photos

I was recently sent these wonderful photos from Lynne Roberts, this is what she says:- ‘

These photos were sent to Mrs F B Marshall, Wooroolin, Queensland from Mrs R J Battye, Post Office, Perth.  I am assuming that the sender is Mrs Rockley James Battye.  Her husband is listed in the Directories for 1905 and 1906, living at Killarney Street, Lamington Heights.  One of the photos also has Will (Battye) notated.

I inherited these two photos from the estate of my husband’s uncle, Stanley Marshall, who was living at the family property, ‘Cedar Gap’, Wooroolin until the time of his death in 1987.  I am yet to establish who Mrs F B Marshall is as Stan’s father was Frederick Laurence Marshall and his wife’s name was Catherine.  The main group photo was taken by J J Dwyer, Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie but the other one is just too faint to make out.

I certainly have headed off track with this quest to try and establish what connection there was between Mrs R J Battye (from Kalgoorlie) and Mrs F B Marshall (in Wooroolin).  I have found various records both in SA and WA for Rockley James Battye and his marriage /birth of his three daughters / and death in 1922.  I have also contacted the closest historical society to Wooroolin in the hope that they may be able to provide some insight into my query.

I have scrutinised both these photos so many times.  I think the lady that is sitting on the right hand side of the Carriers Group photo (in front of the wagon wheel) is the same person who is on the left hand side of the main group photo. There is some handwritten namers on the bottom of the photo but not very clearly Im afraid. This is all I can make out:-

FRONT ROW:   MOTHER; LIL; FRED (? BOY – looks similar to the word ‘Linda’  but that wouldn’t make sense); ROCK; OLLIE or ALLIE??; MCCLURE; WILL (BATTYE); LINDA; MRS MCCLURE AND CHILDREN.

BACK ROW: JUST FRIENDS.   *?? GROUP

If anyone can add any information to Lynne quest it would be much appreciated. One thing about the above photo that I love is the lady with twin babies, or I think they are anyway.
