Although the list of burials at the Sandstone Cemetery has been on the Outback Family History website for some years it needed some research to bring the information up to date and to add in extra research, so dull to read just a list of names and dates. One of my wonderful volunteers agreed to tackle the task so the following is a result of his hard work. Many thanks, David Senn.

Death of John Abernethy – An Open Verdict
The adjourned inquest concerning the death of John Abernethy was held on Friday at the Sandstone Courthouse by Mr A. G. Clifton, R.M. Evidence as to the. finding of Abernethy in an unconscious condition near the rifle range on the previous Sundav evening was tendered by Rev T. C. Oldfield, who advised the police. Constable McArthur was deposed to take the unconscious man to the hospital, and both witnesses were under the impression that the man was either injured or suffering from the effects of drink. James McIntosh, who knew the deceased, stated that he saw him on the previous Sunday at 2.30 p.m., in front of the National Hotel. On the previous Thursday night deceased was very drunk near the National Hotel, and he fell heavily backwards, his head striking the ground.
Dr Stead, medical officer to the Black Range District Hospital, deposed that the deceased was examined by him on Sunday night at about 9.30 at the hospital. He was then in an unconscious condition, and suffering from symptoms of compression of the brain. Abernethy died at 11.42 a.m. on Monday, without regaining consciousness. The state of the deceased’s health on Sunday might have led people to believe he was drunk, but he was evidently then relapsing into unconsciousness. Constable McArthur stated that the deceased had been drinking heavily, having been paid off the previous week, when he received £14 or £15. He was a “good sort” and generous with money when drinking.

OBITUARY – SANDSTONE RESIDENTS – Mr Lou David
On January 15 the death occurred at the Sandstone Hospital of Mr. Lou David at the age of 70 years, after a long illness. The deceased, who is well and favourably known by old Sandstoneites now located throughout all corners of the State, as well as the present population of the town and district, arrived in the district some thirty years ago, when the streets were busy and the town was all abustle with miners and their families, tradespeople and other walks of life that go to make up a mining town. In those times and later he carried out occupations as a miner and prospector. During the last few years, he was employed as general hand by the Black Range Road Board and the Sandstone Water Board.
The cheery disposition of the late Mr David was probably envied by not a few, and it won him many friends. He was an excellent rifle shot and was a member of the Black Range Rifle Club so long as that club was in existence. A story relates that he and two brothers of the family issued a challenge to any other team of three from the one family, but it is not known if this challenge applied only to this State or to the Commonwealth. Deceased had a peg leg. The funeral took place at Sandstone Cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest alongside his eldest son (Lou), who predeceased his father by some years. As far as is known, the deceased is survived by a widow and one other son.

A Bush Tragedy
MAN FALLS FROM A CART.
INJURIES CAUSE DEATH. A man named John M’Carthy, 42 years of age, met his death in a simple manner during the week. M’Carthy, who came from South Australia in 1896, had resided at Maninga Marley for about 18 months, and until five or six weeks ago was engaged in mining. He then undertook the care of stock for Messrs. Connolly and Green, butchers, and on Tuesday of last week, in company with another man, he proceeded to Yallawon Pool for the purpose of watering cattle. After reaching camp and unloading their outfit, they decided to drive a couple of miles southwards in order to ascertain if there was any surface water available. M’Carthy, who had been drinking heavily, was not himself at the time, and it seems that when driving over some rough ground he fll from the cart, the wheel of which passed over his body. Nothing serious was apprehended at the time, but during the night M’Carthy became very ill On Wednesday the horse could not be found, but on Thursday the men were able to return to Maninga Marley, and on Friday the injured man was brought to the Sandstone hospital, where,Dr. Stead examined him. It was then found that two of M’Carthy’s ribs had been badly broken and the lung lacerated to such an extent that Dr Stead held out but little hope of his recovery, M’Carthy lingered until a little after noon on Sunday, when he succumbed to the injuries so simply received.

Mount Magnet Miner and Lennonville Leader 12 November 1910, page 2 – The many friends of Mr William Waters in this district will learn with regret of his death which occurred at the Sandstone racecourse at 6 o’clock on Wednesday morning. It appears that Mr Waters took his horse, Hiawatha, onto the course for exercise, and practically died in the saddle, as, after giving the horse some little work, he was seen to fall from its back and was dead when picked up. The deceased was for many years a teamster on the Mt. Magnet-Lawlers road in the early days but latterly has resided at Sandstone. An inquest was held, and a post-mortem examination showed the cause of death to be heart disease. The funeral took place on Thursday morning at 10 o’clock, and was largely attended, the remains being interred in the Sandstone cemetery.

DID YOU KNOW??? – The town was the inspiration for the mining town in Randolph Stow’s novel Tourmaline which Stow described as “rust-red roofs, the skeletal obelisks of headless windmills … It is not a ghost town. It simply lies in a coma. This may never end.”

Hello, just wondering if you have a grave location for John Woinar at the Sandstone Cemetery? I can’t see his name on the photo of the registry sign – it could be there but I can’t seem to see it. Thank you.
Hi Suzanne I dont think that there is a plan for the Sandstone cemetery but you could check with the Sandstone Shire. John Woinar would have been my husbands GT GT Uncle.
