Ripping Yarns and Tragic Tales – 4 July 2021

Hi Everyone, hope you have had a good week and a Happy 4th July to all our American readers.

DRUMM ROLL !!!

 DRUMM ROLL !!!

The transcripts for the Leonora Cemetery death certificates of those buried at Leonora are all finished! Every entry, all 1651 of them across the two cemeteries the Airport Rd and the current one. Its been a very long time coming and has been spread over the last few yea, and we have added lots of names that weren’t on the original register. Also added are some amazing photographs of the people and newspaper article about them.

So me and my friend ‘Grammarly’ are now just doing a final run-through to check spelling and punctuation. Of course, there will be some errors, and I do love people to let me know if they spot something. I will let you know when everything is online and able to be viewed. Here is a sample of one of the entries. Everything should be up and running by next week.

DAVIES Helen Eva — 83yrs, d 11 Dec 1935, at Leonora Hospital, Old Age Pensioner, Cause: Senile heart and blood pressure, Cerebral Hemorrhage, Father: John Parker BUTTFIELD (Magistrate), Mother: Anna Louisa CAREY, Born: Gumeracha SA, In SA 45yrs, In WA 38yrs, Married to Thomas Richard Walter DAVIES in Blinman SA at age 16yrs, Children: Anna Louisa 65yrs, Eva Alice 60yrs, Walter Buttfield 58yrs, Lillie Agnes & Susie (Twins) 55yrs, 2 males deceased, Reg 27/1935 Mt Margaret, ANG, Buried Leonora Cemetery.

I hope that you enjoy looking at the entries for a much smaller cemetery this week (only 31 known burials) at Mulline. There are two entries that stand out, that of 11yr old Wallace Cocking, not just because he is a distant relative of my husband, but because of the tragic story behind the entry. If you wish to click the link to the full story in the post, you will see what I mean. The second is rather a humorous entry. That of John Shews Talbot dancing in a Maori Haka, there was a studio portrait of him, but I thought this photo was too good not to share. What makes it more unusual is that he’s an Irishman and not a New Zealander at all He has no headstone but this photo makes up for it don’t you think???

Well its good bye from me, as always have a great week and I will see you next Sunday.
