Note: there appears to be an error made on this marker. The “J H Armstrong Regimental No 426 ” as quoted is not buried here. Mining Fatality at Peak Hill
MAN’S HEAD SHATTERED.
RESULT OF A MISFIRE

A frightful accident occurred at the Peak Hill Company’s mine, on Thursday, which cast quite a gloom over the town, when it became known that William Bennington, a miner, familiarly known as “Nugget”, had been killed. It appears the deceased had put in his last charge for the day, and, thinking it had misfired he returned to the stope, when the charge exploded blowing the top of his head off, while one thumb and the breast were scorched. He had evidently been leaning over the hole at the time and had his coat on ready to leave, The clothes were torn to ribbons. Bennington was a quiet, steady, and reticent man about 30 years of age. He is supposed to have been a native of Victoria, and has relatives at Warrnambool. The accident happened at about four o’clock.

– Thomas Preston, was found dead in his camp at Peak Hill, last Tuesday. A 32-bore rifle was found lying beside the body, and a bullet hole behind the left ear of the deceased showed the cause of death. Warden Crockett, who was on his way to Mt. Egerton, held an inquest on the body. It appears the deceased, who was a miner, had been working a show at the Horseshoe for some time with no success and had just given it up. He appeared rather despondent, and was suffering from a miner’s phthisis cough, but was not altogether without means as the sum of £5 was found in his pocket. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
