Michael John CARRIGG was born on the 4 Aug 1868 in Toowoomba, Queensland and died on 14 June 1921 in Kalgoorlie WA. He was the oldest son of Austin Carrigg and Margaret nee Flanagan, both from Ireland. His father was a Justice of the Peace in Toowoomba Queensland.
Michael was married to Catherine Hannah Harrington on 17 Sep 1899 in Perth WA. Hannah was a widow who had been married previously to George Stevens, she had two children to George, John William born 1893 and Dorothy Nellie Catherine born 1895. Michael and Catherine were to have a further seven children two of which died young and are buried together in the Kalgoorlie Cemetery. They travelled to the Goldfields not long after their marriage where their first child, Austin John, was born in 1900.

In 1910 the family lived at 167 Dugan Street, Cnr Lane & Dugan Sts, Kalgoorlie. While in Coolgardie Michael went into partnership with Howard Mays forming the company Mays and Carrigg Plumbers and Ironworkers. However this partnership was dissolved in 1897 with the agreement that the business name would remain as Mays and Carrigg. Howard Mays carried on as a plumber in Kalgoorlie under his own name at 14 Cassidy Street, Kalgoorlie.

OBITUARY: M. J. CARRIGG – AN OLD IDENTITY AND GOOD UNIONIST.
The death occurred on the 14th of June, of Michael John Carrigg, a pioneer master-plumber of the goldfields. The deceased, who was 52 years of age, succumbed, after an illness of three months; leaving a widow and five children to mourn his loss. He was born in the Darling Downs of Queensland, where, he learnt his trade and came to the West some 30 years ago. The deceased, after being engaged in contracting work in the metropolis, came to Coolgardie early in 1894, where, in conjunction with a partner Hector Mays; he set up in business. For some years he had business premises in both Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie, finally relinquishing his business in the latter place in 1900, and coming permanently to Kalgoorlie.
The funeral, which was., largely attended, took place on the 15th, and proceeded from deceased’s residence in Dugan Street, to St. Mary’s Church, thence to the Kalgoorlie Cemetery. Funeral arrangement were in the hands of A. and J. Kyle.
Catherine Carrigg died in Claremont WA in 1946 and is buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery.
