A Terrible Death
Geraldton Advertiser 5 February 1901
A death in the bush from thirst took place down the line on the 22nd inst. under circumstances that point to the fact that the victim, Giacomo Bettini, must have been utterly devoid of all idea of locality, in addition to having no nerve whatever. It seems that four Italians went to the 16-mile tank to cut wood, and on the 22nd inst, they left the tank and went to look for a patch of timber. After going a little way out Bettini stopped behind and the others went on, when Bettini didn’t catch up they returned to look for him.
They searched for several hours, but not finding any traces of him they returned to the tanks. On the 23rd they reported the matter to the police at Cue at 10.30 a.m., and Constable Ellis and a tracker started out. The 16-mile tanks being 30 miles from Cue, he had only about an hour before dark to work in. He, however, succeeded in picking up the lost man’s tracks, and resuming in the morning he found the dead body.
One boot was off and the hat lay beside him. The deceased had torn up the ground for a distance of 50 yards all around in his death struggles. The body was found within half a mile, actually in sight of the tanks. He had evidently given up shortly after losing his way and wandered round and round. The sound of the rushing railway train and the shrieking of the engine whistle was unheeded by him as the cars thundered close by him at night, and this would lead to the suspicion that he may have been sunstruck, for Tuesday and Wednesday, 22nd and 23rd, were very hot days, Wednesday being 111 degrees in the shade. The burial of the body was undertaken by Mr. L Varisco, of Lennonville, a countryman of the deceased.
