Kanowna Cemetery – a work in progress

Usually, when doing a cemetery upgrade for the Outback Family History website, I work on it until everything has been checked again and again and we have photographs of those buried there where available, and also newspaper articles and copies of inscriptions added.

For the Kanowna Cemetery (the second one) we are going to do it a little differently this time and hopefully with more interaction and help from readers. The following is our ‘first draft’ !

This comprises of the transcripts from the available death certificates (all handwritten ones so there could be mistakes), headstone inscriptions where they exist and some newspaper articles. From this framework, we hope to work on it ‘live’, so to speak. It won’t be transferred to the Outback Family History Web site for a while. I have copies of all of the current headstone photographs which I will upload soon.

I would like to ask readers if they could help either if:

  1. They have a relative buried here, they check the entry and let us know if all is correct and they send us any additional information or photographs that can be added.
  2. Should you like to pick a name that doesn’t have very much detail and see what you can find on the person via such things as TROVE or Ancestry.com etc.

It has taken me about a year and a half to get to this point, (way longer than most have done),  and as we are hopefully going to complete the restoration of the cemetery by the end of this year, I would like to have the ‘finished’, or as finished as possible list ready to go. Of course, you never actually ‘finish’ a cemetery record as there is always room for correction and additions.

There are two things you need to notice. The inscriptions and the newspaper items are in red after the entry. You will see a few names in italics, we are not sure if they are definitely in this cemetery or in the first cemetery which is on the other side of the Kanowna townsite. They were buried during the transfer period and although we have the burial place on the certificate as ‘Kanowna’, it doesn’t say which cemetery because of course, if you were there at the time, you would know. The first cemetery will be dealt with by the Eastern Goldfields Historical Soc when they redo the Kanowna Heritage Trail. I have sent the list to them and hopefully, we may be able to confirm these ‘not sure’ ones along the way.

Myself and other volunteers will be adding information as we go along, so each time you log onto the blog it may be a little different. So there we have it. I know that many of our readers are skilled researchers, from researching their own family histories to helping others to do the same, and some historians who research a subject or a place. Others may just have an interest in Goldfields history. Input from all is most welcome and should you wish to have your contact details added if you are a relative added to an entry, so should other family members find it they can get in touch do let us know.

To get in touch you can email us on:
research@outbackfamilyhistory.com.au
Remember to include your source in any details sent.

As always everything on both the Outback Family History website and blog is free to all to copy and use.

Advertiser  3 April 1900, page 7  THE LATE MR. T. H. AYLIFFE.
There are many people in this colony who will learn with regret of the death of Mr. Thomas Hamilton Ayliffe, at Kanowna in West Australia, on March 27.The deceased was a descendant in the direct line of the family of the Earl of Egremont. He came out to South Australia in 1838 in the ship Pestonjee Bomanjee, when only four years old, with his parents and grandfather.  Governor Gawler, who was an intimate friend of his parents, was a passenger by the same vessel. In the early days of the colony Mr. Ayliffe commenced business as a contractor for Government works, and as a result he has left many lasting memorials of his skill and industry in the colony. Many of the principal roads of the colony were constructed by him, amongst them being the road to Glenelg, and the main road which leads in the direction of Willunga. The Morphett-street river bridge was built by him and also the Clarendon bridge, as well as many others.
He was engaged in this business for a considerable time and amassed a fair amount of wealth. Subsequently he engaged in cattle speculation and lost all that he had previously gained. In 1873 he went to New Zealand, where he obtained interests in gold mining ventures and turned his attention to mining. He remained there for several years, and when the gold fields in the Northern Territory commenced to be opened, he obtained an appointment as leader of a gold prospecting party representing a powerful syndicate. He spent eight years in the Territory, and then returned to Adelaide, where he established himself in business as an auctioneer and commission agent.
When the gold fields in the West attracted attention, he was drawn back to his former occupation, and he was interested in gold mining there up to the time of his death. Mr. Ayliffe leaves a widow, two sons, Mr. G. E. N. Ayliffe, a surveyor in the Engineer-in-Chief’s Department, Adelaide, and Mr. P. St. Barbe Ayliffe, of the Bangemall gold fields, Gascoigne River, West Australia. There are also three daughters, Mrs. H. R. Smythe, of Adelaide; Miss E. Ayliffe, of the Childers-street, North Adelaide, private school; and Miss B. Ayliffe, who has a school at Green’s Plains. Mr. G. H. Ayliffe, the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, and Secretary of the Central Board of Health, is a younger brother of the deceased.

SUICIDE AT KANOWNA. Information was received at the Kanowna Police station on Sunday evening to the effect that Benjamin Brandt, known on the fields more commonly as “Benny the Jew,” was lying dead in his camp on the “Old Cement.” Sergeant Pilkington lost no time in investigating the matter, and on reaching the camp he and the hurriedly found that Brandt had made a thorough job of his self-destruction. From the examination, it appears that Brandt, who was last seen in town on Friday afternoon, must have committed the deed on the same evening, as the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition.
His head was almost severed from his body, which work had apparently been performed by a razor which, together with a small looking glass, was found steeped in a pool of blood on the earthen floor. Nothing in the shape of a letter was left by the old pioneer who has been in Kanowna for over 10 years. It is considered, however, that although he was recently released from the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum, where he was placed a few months ago on account of his strange conduct at a Perth coffee palace, he has never been quite right mentally since his return. Brandt, who was well connected with the Hebraic community in Sydney (New South Wales), was about 57 years of age at the time of his decease.

KANOWNA, Sept. 26. The tragedy, which was reported in your issue of today, appears, from what can be gathered, to be the result of a Frecnchman’s jealousy. The assassin, Henri Lanzi, after cutting Josephine Le Loup’s neck and throat, thought he had killed her outright; and forthwith proceeded to take his own life. With a razor, he first cut one of his arms near the elbow, and then completely severed his windpipe. Finding that this did not produce death as soon as he wished he apparently fired several shots into his head from a revolver, as there were several powder marks visible near his mouth when the body was conveyed to the morgue at the hospital. An inquest was opened today, before the coroner (Mr P. Troy) and a jury consisting of Messrs. Doolette, Grieve, and McDonald. After viewing Lanzi’s remains, the inquiry was adjourned until next Tuesday. The woman Le Loup, who is at present in the hospital, is in a serious condition, her neck being cut right into the cervical vertebrae, but Dr. Ewing has hopes for her ultimate recovery.

Relative Kerry Barber sent me the following article:  In September 1882 local Victorian newspapers refer to the mysterious disappearance of Louisa’s husband Alfred Anderson Pickering, from Clunes Victoria in August 1882, this was before their eldest son Herbert Alfred died in Clunes on 18 November 1882, he was 18.   Alfred was the Clunes borough pound keeper and assistant bailiff for the Clunes County Court.  The newspapers report Alfred as stating he was going to Avoca on business and would be away for 2 days at the most.  Alfred arrived in Maryborough and bought a ticket for Avoca, there is no record of him arriving in Avoca or any further contact. Local newspapers in September 1882 report that the Clunes borough council received a petition from the ratepayers for Louisa Pickering to be appointed to the Office of Poundkeeper, this position made vacant following the disappearance of her husband.  A newspaper article on 13 September 1882  reports “there should be no hesitation in the matter of the appointment seeing the many directions in which ladies’ services are made available where formerly it was considered the duties could only be performed by officials of the male persuasion”

Western Argus21 May 1918, page  7 THE LATE MR. J. T.  RUTTLE FUNERAL AT Kanowna, May 13. The funeral of the late Mr J. T. Ruttle who died as the result of an accident, took place at Kanowna. Cemetery on Monday and as might be anticipated his popularity and the. esteem in which the public have. held him, was amply demonstrated by the large attendance. The deceased had been. identified with Kanowna from its earliest days and had ever taken an active interest in its advancement, rendering many valued services in his various positions as town councilor, member and chairman of the Road Board, justice of the peace, ‘etc. These positions he had filled for a great many years with marked intelligence, and at considerable personal sacrifice. He was ever ready and willing in the cause of charity or patriotism to give hearty and, liberal assistance and his untimely end will leave a void in our limited political and social circle. The funeral took place at 3 o’clock, and being under the control of the Masonic body of whom the deceased was a Past Master, started from the Masonic Hall after the performance of the usual ceremonials. The Cortege was unusually imposing. A double line of Masons in their regalia of office preceded the hearse, marching to the plaintive dirges of pipes played by a brother Mason. Following the hearse, a long column of motor cars and conveyances served to constitute one of the largest funerals Kanowna has witnessed. At the grave, the Rev. A. W. Wellington was very impressive in his deliverance of the funeral service, and the Right Worshipful Bro, E. K. Beaumont conducted the Masonic service. The deceased, who was 66 years of age was buried in the Presbyterian section of the ground, the undertakers being McIver aid Walker, of Kalgoorlie. Among the wreaths sent were those from the following Masonic Lodge 855. Goldfields ‘Motor Club. Mr and Mrs. J L Martin, Mrs. J. Wilmott, Mr. and Mrs, H Martin, Mr. and Mrs, T. J. Willis,

MINING FATALITY AT KANOWNA Kanowna, Oct. 24. A fatal accident occurred at the Lily Australis mine on Saturday morning. The victim was Richard Thwaites, a widower, about 55 years of age, who was an experienced miner. About 9 a.m. Thwaites and his mate, Henry Thomas, were engaged in timbering between the 8.0 ft. and 900 ft. levels. It was soon ascertained that he had been struck by a falling block of mullock, weighing about 2 cwt., and had been knocked down a pass2 a depth of about 80 ft.. Kalgoorlie Miner, Thu 6 Sep 1900 Accident 11th July, died in Hospital 5th September. After lingering for two months in the hospital with a broken spine, John Youngman breathed his last early this morning. Since the accident, which practically killed him at the outset, his mates have been unremitting in their care towards him. Deceased was about 43 years of age, and had been in the colony for many years, being one of those on the Kimberley and Murchison rushes. The funeral, which is to take, place to-morrow, is certain to be very largely attended, as Youngman was a general favorite among the miners and the townspeople.

    HI Moya
you have listed a stillborn female 01 06 1912 Child of David Henderson and Mary Jane Fahey. They are my great grandparents, Elsie May Mathews is their daughter. Thanks so much for all your research. I love it when you find my family members. I had no idea about this child so thanks again. My great grandparents were both suffering from diabetes and as a result they both died from complications in 1918 and 1917 respectively and are both buried in the Comet Vale cemetery.
    cheers Bev Whiteman
