As many of you will know if you have been following our stories for a while, Outback Family History embarked on a project to restore and preserve the Kanowna Cemetery. This is the second cemetery located on Yarri Road. This was three years ago and I would now like to advise you how far we have progressed. It has been a long and slow progress but I am so glad we undertook the venture.
Three years ago the cemetery was a disgrace to both locals and visitors. The car parking area was strewn with rubbish and was used as a drinking place if you saw the type of rubbish left. At least a third of the fencing had fallen down and this had allowed both human and animal vandals (cattle like to scratch themselves on the headstone) to access the cemetery grounds with disastrous results. Nature had also done its part in a flood way had established itself at the far end of the cemetery causing much soil erosion and damage to the headstone in that area.
We put out the call for assistance and were contacted by the Eastern Goldfields Prison. They said that they would like to help with a project like this to assist prisoners who could learn skills on work release. I was invited to tour the prison workshops and was most impressed. Since then their help has been unfailing and their work of the highest quality.
Fast forward to today, the EG Prison has done the most amazing work firstly in restoring the fencing, sourcing out local mulga to match the original and re-wiring to whole area. They made the most decroative new gate for the entrance and are also making a directional sign to be fitted on the main road to match this. The council also had been a huge help in clearing up the parking area and now it is a pleasant place to stop with tables, seats and bins.
I would like to show you our latest addition which is a brand new information board that tells the story of the Cemetery and has QR codes for the full record of all buried there and two selected stories of those people. The cost of this sign was donated anonymously by a local business. We have also had the offer of material to redo the pathways which also form the denominational boundaries.
I would like to say we will try to restore all of the broken headstones, and this is what I had intended, however, I don’t think the funds would be able to be raised for such a large job. I do however intend to see if we can secure funding for the grave of the two stories featured on our sign board. That of ‘Little Teddy Murray’ and ‘Sono Sakamoto’.
The second part, which is my job, is that we now have as complete a list as possible of those buried in the cemetery and as much information as I could find on each and every one of them. This has taken all of three years to complete and although I know that there is no such thing as a ‘Perfect Historical Record’ this is what we have. There is a brief (and sometimes not so brief) record of each person and I have also taken photographs of all of the headstones and memorials. There are photographs of some of the people and newspaper articles published at the time they died. It really does give you a true cross-section of the town in its day and this cemetery’s life from 1898 to 1945.
So far, thanks to our friends, we have not had to spend a single dollar. This full list of burials is also on the Outback Family History Kanowna Cemetery Page on our website.
For these 436 men, women and children, I hope that they will rest in ‘just a little more peace’ than before, as we have not forgotten them.

Advertiser 3 April 1900, page 7 THE LATE MR. T. H. AYLIFFE.
There are many people in this colony who will learn with regret of the death of Mr. Thomas Hamilton Ayliffe, at Kanowna in West Australia, on March 27. The deceased was a descendant in the direct line of the family of the Earl of Egremont. He came out to South Australia in 1838 on the ship Pestonjee Bomanjee, when only four years old, with his parents and grandfather. Governor Gawler, who was an intimate friend of his parents, was a passenger on the same vessel. In the early days of the colony, Mr Ayliffe commenced business as a contractor for Government works, and as a result, he has left many lasting memories of his skill and industry in the colony. Many of the principal roads of the colony were constructed by him, amongst them being the road to Glenelg and the main road that leads in the direction of Willunga. The Morphett-Street River Bridge was built by him and also the Clarendon Bridge, as well as many others.
He was engaged in this business for a considerable time and amassed a fair amount of wealth. Subsequently, he engaged in cattle speculation and lost all that he had previously gained. In 1873 he went to New Zealand, where he obtained interests in gold mining ventures and turned his attention to mining. He remained there for several years, and when the gold fields in the Northern Territory commenced to be opened, he obtained an appointment as leader of a gold prospecting party representing a powerful syndicate. He spent eight years in the Territory and then returned to Adelaide, where he established himself in business as an auctioneer and commission agent.
When the gold fields in the West attracted attention, he was drawn back to his former occupation, and he was interested in gold mining there up to the time of his death. Mr. Ayliffe leaves a widow, two sons, Mr. G. E. N. Ayliffe, a surveyor in the Engineer-in-Chief’s Department, Adelaide, and Mr. P. St. Barbe Ayliffe, of the Bangemall gold fields, Gascoigne River, West Australia. There are also three daughters, Mrs H. R. Smythe, of Adelaide; Miss E. Ayliffe, of the Childers Street, North Adelaide, private school; and Miss B. Ayliffe, who has a school at Green’s Plains. Mr G. H. Ayliffe, the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, and Secretary of the Central Board of Health, is a younger brother of the deceased.

SUICIDE AT KANOWNA. Information was received at the Kanowna Police station on Sunday evening to the effect that Benjamin Brandt, known on the fields more commonly as “Benny the Jew,” was lying dead in his camp on the “Old Cement.” Sergeant Pilkington lost no time in investigating the matter, and on reaching the camp he and the hurriedly found that Brandt had made a thorough job of his self-destruction. From the examination, it appears that Brandt, who was last seen in town on Friday afternoon, must have committed the deed on the same evening, as the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition.
His head was almost severed from his body, which work had apparently been performed by a razor which, together with a small looking glass, was found steeped in a pool of blood on the earthen floor. Nothing in the shape of a letter was left by the old pioneer who has been in Kanowna for over 10 years. It is considered, however, that although he was recently released from the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum, where he was placed a few months ago on account of his strange conduct at a Perth coffee palace, he has never been quite right mentally since his return. Brandt, who was well connected with the Hebraic community in Sydney (New South Wales), was about 57 years of age at the time of his decease.
