It’s not often that I come across a Goldfields town that I have not heard of before, but this is a new one for me. Although no traces of a town exist today it appears that mining is still carried out in the area.
Situated 26 miles East North East of Kanowna its appears to have been mainly a mining area. However it never seems to have been gazetted as a town even though it is referred to as such in the newspapers of the time. It was said to have both a residential and a business area. From the licencing court records there appears to be a shop and a liquor supplier.
Kanowna licencing Court – 1902 – W. J. Burke, was the holder of a gallon license at the mining township of Kalpini, and D. Mahony, a storekeeper in the same locality, each applied for a provisional certificate. Mr.’ Field appeared for the applicant Burke, and Mi. Aniheim for D. Mahony. W- J. Burke deposed it, his certificate were granted, he would erect premises accordingly. These would, cost £800, irrespective of the carting of the material, which he would do himself. The population of Kalpini was about 80 adult males, but there was a good deal of traffic from Kanowna.
By 1903 the population had risen to 100 and an application was made for a school to be established as there were a good number of children. This never came about and the town petered out.
