Kalgoorlie Hospital – the first records

I was fortunate that a friend came across, and copied, the following admission register for the Kalgoorlie Hospital at State Records in Perth. It dates from Dec 1894 to May 1896. These would be the very first people treated on the same site as the Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital in Piccadilly Street, Kalgoorlie today.

Kalgoorlie Hospital admissions 1894-1896

Kalgoorlie Hospital admissions 1894-1896

It is comprised of 36 handwritten pages. They include the following information, however the records change from page to page. The earlier pages having much less detail.

Full name
Age
Religion
Martial Status (on some)
Occupation
Next of kin and their address
Place of birth
Complaint
Remarks
Date of Discharge or Death

The following are an example of a few of the entries:-

8 Jan 1896 – Kate DEATHE – Age 30 – Presbyterian – Enteric Fever – Born Ireland – Housemaid – NOK = Sister, Annie DEATHE, Ennis County, Wexford Ireland, Discharged 4 Apr 1896 (I believe this is the first female to be recorded, however a few entries only have the initial so cant be sure)

3 Feb 1896 – Henry NIBLETT – Age 48 – Baptist – Wound to forehead – Born England – Occ Mason – Address Brown Hill – Subscriber – Wife Sarah NIBLETT, Balmain Sydney. – Discharged 13 Feb 1896

1 May 1896 – John RUTTER  –  Age 18 – Single – Church of England – North Boulder –  Born Walhalla North Gippsland, – NOK Brother George.

10 May 1896 – William CAREY – Age 53 – Roman Catholic – Cirrhosis of the liver – Born Ireland – Blacksmith at Hampton Plains – Wife Mary in Mansfield VIC – discharged 30 Mar 1896

13 Jan 1896 – Priscilla PEARCE – Age 33 – Baptist – Abortion – Born England – Husband James, Clerk at Randalls – discharged 26 Jan 1896.

8 May 1896 – Peter CHANDLER – Age 22 – Roman Catholic – Single – Born Stratford, Gippsland, VIC – Mother Mary CHANDLER in Stratford, Gippsland, VIC – Died 31 May 1896

So as you see these entries will be a valuable addition to the information on the very early Goldfields people.

The records have now been painstakenly transcribed by one of our dedicated volunteers, Michelle. The following is a transcript of this whole register:-

My name is Moya Sharp, I live in Kalgoorlie Western Australia and have worked most of my adult life in the history/museum industry. I have been passionate about history for as long as I can remember and in particular the history of my adopted home the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Through my website I am committed to providing as many records and photographs free to any one who is interested in the family and local history of the region.

  1. Kay Bell says

What a great find- thank goodness you have some foot soldiers on the lookout.

  2. Max Bell says

Can’t wait to be able to see the full records. My grandfather David Bell (Miner) is believed to have my grandmother Minna Victoria Compton (Nurse) while a patient at a Goldfields Hospital in 1895. They married at Southern Cross in February 1896.

  3. Peter Robinson says

Hi Moya, a very valuable find indeed!

Is it possible to obtain, or access, a copy of the full list?

    • Hi Peter I will post the whole list as soon as it is transcribed. However I do have the complete records for the hospital up to 1941 which are several thousand entries. This will all go together with the records from this book.

  4. How can I find out if the Hirschausen (various spellings) name appears? My husband’s grandmother was on the goldfields with her family in the 19th century.

  5. Julie van de Water says

Hi Moya. What a great find. Although I live in SA, my great-uncle Patrick Doyle lived in WA and is buried at Leonora. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Julie

  6. Donna redfearn. says

    Thus is priceless. Thanku.

  7. Merryl Eitelhuber says

Is there an entry for Federick Harris Purcell, of County Cork, Ireland. Died 10th Feb, 1900, aged 68 years? His gravestone is pictured on the Menzies Info brochure and his grave is in Menzies. I believe he was the brother of Margaret Louisa Hovell nee Purcell. (My great, great grandmother).

  8. Kaye Silverthorne says

Thank you for all the work that you do… I will be very interested to review the list of patients etc … the name “Silverthorne” is my interest…once again thank you.

  9. Linda Mayer says

Hello, thanks for sharing this book. I look forward to seeing all names as my Mayer family lived there and my pop was born there. Thank you

  10. Edwina Shooter says

Fabulous news, Moya – I’ll look forward to seeing if any of my DATE and SHOOTER families are in it. I have used several hospital registers for places in Victoria and they are a wonderful resource.

Thank you so much for all you do for Outback researchers. It is very much appreciated.

    • Hi Edwina, How are you going? I actually have all of the hospital records for Kalgoorlie up to 1941 and I hope to post the full index in 2019. Its a huge job but it will happen. Most of the records have been transcribed already (the index only) and there are thousands of entries as you can imagine. Im happy to do any look ups in the mean time if you have a rough date.

      • Edwina Shooter says

Thank you Moya but I’d be fossicking for a DATE or SHOOTER – no particular dates, just curious like any good genie! Cheerio

  11. Debra Seale née Baldrey says

    Wow, so exciting.
Cant wait to see the transcriptions.
Looking for Bushe-Jones history – Gervais (night cart man) & Eileen married in Kalgoorlie who had 5 children, Colin, Theo, Coral, Eileen, Arthur
Lived in Boulder, Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. Mum (Eileen) her mum decided she wanted something to eat on way to hospital so stopped for a cart (gutter as people use to sit on the high gutter to eat snack) snack (guess it was the first version of drive through takeaway) but too late my mum was born near the original position of Hannan’s statue (mum said the statue was moved to its current position?) cheers.

    • Hi Debra What a great s tory about the stop for a snack!! (: I actually have all of the Kalgoorlie Hospital records up to 1941 and most of them are transcribed already so these ones will just add to the overall picture). I think that hospital recorrds more that anything else show a good cross section of any community as illness and accidents show no favorites. I there is something you would like looking up do let me know. All the info that is on the web site at the moment is only about half of what I still have to go one there. Happy to search the unpublished records for you if that would help.

  12. Hi Moya – I am researching a fellow name Horatio Claude Barber and I believe he was the secretary of the Kalgoorlie Hospital at the same time as this record book. – from 1896 to 1897. Barber’s brother, George Walter was health officer at the hospital and I assume he appointed his younger brother to the post. Would there be any record of H C Barber in this journal?
Maggie – Cobalt Historical Society and the home of H C Barber’s Cobalt Open Call Mining Exchange, no doubt inspired by his time in Kalgoorlie – brother George was a member of the exchange.

  13. Pam ( Fowler ) Stephens- Head says

Hi … I’m looking for any history for the Fowler family who lived in Kalgoorlie. My grandfather Thomas Henry Fowler was publican at several hotels in the Boulder Kalgoorlie and also Coolgardi areas. He was also a miner and so was my father Murray H Fowler . My grandmother was Winifred Fowler and there was also Veronica and Norma.. two sisters. I’d really appreciate any mention of them that you can find

  14. Simon Doyle says

Hi Moya (& Maggie), I am writing a book on Dr George Barber (my great grandfather who arrived in Kalgoorlie in 1895) and I mention Horatio Claude in passing. George Barber had an interesting life – serving as a ship doctor, before joining the AIF (Assistant Director Medical Services 4th Division and then Deputy Director Medical Services of the Australian Corps). After the war he became Director General of Medical Services for Army and RAAF. Any further information on Horatio Claude would be most appreciated.

Moya, I am seeking permission to use the photo of the Kalgoorlie Hospital (from this site). Do you know who has copyright?
    thank you
    Simon
