There are roughly 94 burials in the Bulong Cemetery, but only 17 identifiable headstone. By far the most impressive of these and the best preserved, is the memorial to John Holt. As you will see no expense was spared.
After the Christian cross, the urn is one of the most commonly used cemetery monuments. The design represents a funerary urn, which is thought to symbolize immortality. The drape over the urn, or any other part of a monument, is said to symbolize the veil between life and death.
HOLT John, died 7 Jul 1900, at the Bulong Hospital, 46yrs, Occupation:- Battery Manager, Cause:- Syncope – Morbus Cordis, Father:- John HOLT (Miner), Mother:- Agnes WILSON, Born:- Manchester England on the 11 Jul 1854, In VIC 39yrs, In WA 3yrs 11mths, Married to Mary Jane WILLIS in All Saints Church, Sandhurst, Bendigo Victoria at age 20yrs on the 8th Aug 1874.
Children:- Rose Alice Maud Anne 24yrs, Edith Mary 22yrs, Ethel Lucy Elinor 15yrs, George Willis 20yrs, Hurbert Henry 13yrs, 1 male deceased, Informant:- George Willis HOLT (Son), Anglican Section, Buried in the Bulong Cemetery.
John Holt died intestate, but his estate of £1391 was eventually left to his widow Mary.
Johns wife Mary never remarried, but returned to Eaglehawk Victoria where she died on the 6th Nov 1924.
