Golden Threads- book review

GOLDEN THREADS, Poetry from Western Australia’s gold rush

This week saw the arrival in town of a new book on the poetry of the bush. I was very kindly given a copy by the author, John Terrell

In the words of our Mayor, John Bowler:-
‘John Terrell has done it again. His book on Goldfields Sport is the bible to sporting enthusiasts and historians and now this book will be a must read for lovers of bush ballads and poetry from our colourful past, making it an excellent part of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder 125th celebrations.’

This excellent publication is packed with amazing verse and photographs. It will make the idea present for both locals and ex pat Goldfielders. A treasure trove of bush ballads and old yarns. This is a ‘must have’ for your collection of Goldfields Books.

from ‘Farewell to the Bushland’ by Temora

Let my longing eyes still linger on those scenes before I go,
‘Ere I face the city turmoil let me once more gladness know
Let me listen while the Bell-bird sings his low, sad curfew bell,
Let me take those mem’ries with me – dear old Bushland, fare you well.

When the cares of Life are over in the evening of the day
and the clouds of dark depression from my sky has passed away,
When the struggle for existence with its bitterness is past,
May I see a peaceful sunset ‘mid those Bushland scenes at last.

from ‘A Bloke from Mullingar’ by John Phillip ‘Bluebush’ Bourke

I met him nearly farthest out-
No matter when or where
He carried in his ragged clothes
A kind of city air.
I said “I’ve just been wondering
The devil who you are?”

And he replied in broken tones
“Im all that’s left of Billy Jones,
The Beau of Mullingar!”
