DISGRACEFUL CONDUCT AT BONNIEVALE
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—Will you allow me, through the medium of your valuable paper, to draw the Police Inspector’s attention to the state of affairs at Bonnievale. Almost every Sunday evening there is a crowd of people collected around the leading hotel, some of them in a state of intoxication, the result being that such conduct and language is indulged in that it is not fit for a respectable woman to walk along the street.
Occasionally the proceedings finish up with a disgraceful drunken brawl, as was the case last Sunday evening, when several drunken men started to fight, and were encouraged to do so by a number of other men, who call themselves respectable citizens, one of them being the employer of one of the fighters. The brawl terminated in an apparently unsatisfactory manner to those interested, as there is talk now of bringing the men together for a stake of £10, a state of affairs which the constable would do well to keep a watch on.
A suggestive fact in connection with the affair is that the later on Sunday evening the more intoxicated and unruly these men become. I would like to suggest to the Police Inspector that he instruct the visiting constable to remain here until a late hour on Saturday and Sunday evenings, as I believe the fact of a policeman being in the town would prevent these disgraceful scenes. I hear that one of. the men. was badly hurt on nday last, and if these things are allowed to continue some of our townsmen may find themselves mixed up in a painful and degrading affair similar to that experienced by some of the Kanowna people recently. I trust the authorities – will take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such conduct.
A BONNIEVALE RESIDENT.
