I first read this book many years ago, in 1998, not long after it was published in 1996. It was a fascinating read then and I have really enjoyed reading it again recently when I was able to purchase a copy of my own. I wish I had bought it way back then but as is the case with many local history books it was difficult to track down. I have learnt my lesson now and always purchase a copy of a Goldfields history book when it comes out. Copies can still be purchaced through:-
Mrs Helen Hill, 36 Greenlees Way, Carabooda, 6033. Price $20.00 inc Post in Australia.
This book will appeal to all those who are interested in the history of the Western Australian Goldfields as it is rich in stories and photographs from all over the district. The photographs are exceptional and you will see many that you will not see elsewhere such as the ones in this post plus others such as ‘The Kurnalpi Hotel’, the remains and the cellar are still evident in the ghost town of Kurnalpi.
‘They Called Kurnalpi Home’ by Douglas Cable, is the story of the pioneering Cable and Lardner families who were joined together by John Cable and Ellen Lardner. Their son, Douglas Cable, traces the stories of their successors from the British Isles and the United States of the USA to those who came to Western Australia through a pioneering era of history that will never be repeated. This book follows the fortunes of a family through the mining pastoral and farming industries in times of success and hardship.
The legacy of the stories in this book will stand the test of time. Douglas Cable recalls the tales of goldfields found, of exploration and innovation and the spirit of endeavor and co-operation which have become the hallmarks of the Cables, Lardner’s and their families to the present day
This book is now out of print but can be borrowed through the local Kalgoorlie Boulder Library or through your inter library loan facility at your nearest library.

Moya it was John not Charles Cable who married Ellen Lardner. They had three daughters and five sons. Mercy, Florence (Flo), Ellen, Jack,Martin, Jim, Douglas (Doug),and Charles (Charley).
Ellen died and is buried in the new Kanowna cemetery with her Mother and Father.
John cable remarried after her death to Kate Lardner (Ellen’s sister) and they retired to Shenton park.
They were interred at the cemetery just down Railway Parade from where they lived out their final years.
Hi Bob Many thanks for letting me know I have corrected the mistake!
