There is a mystery surrounding the above grave at Bulong, from some 25 years ago. Around this time, I was contacted by my friend, Mike Logan, who was the Gt Grandson of Patrick Logan. He had made the trip to the Goldfields to visit the grave of his relative in the Bulong cemetery. He also gave me a copy of the following newspaper article.
Kalgoorlie Western August 18 March 1902, page 26
FUNERAL OF COUNCILLOR. P. LOGAN. AT BULONG.
The largest attendance at a funeral in Bulong followed the remains of the late Cr. Logan to the Bulong Cemetery on Tuesday, 11th inst. The cortege left the Roman Catholic Church soon after 4 p.m, a short service being held in the church prior to starting for the cemetery.
The general respect in which the deceased in Kanowna and other centres was shown, as included in the procession were representatives of the different bodies with which the deceased had been connected. The Bulong branch of the A.W.A. (of which the deceased was treasurer) headed the procession, while the pall bearers were the Mayor (Mr. James Townsend). Cr. Richardson and Mr. McNaboe (representing the Municipal Council). Mr. William Henderson (hospital committee), Mr. J. D. Lockard (A.W.A.), and Mr. M. O’Connell, who was recently in partnership with the deceased. The Rev. Father O’Donnell conducted the last rites of the church. and referred briefly to the great loss the community had sustained by the early death of so estimable a citizen, and one whom so many showed their respect to. A very large number of beautiful wreaths were placed upon the coffin.”
The visit of Mike Logan, Patrick Logan’s Gt Grandson, was long before the internet was available and all correspondence had to be by post. He had hoped to find the memorial on the grave, not quite as it was in the photograph from the newspaper, but identifiable. However, the cemetery at Bulong was not the neat fenced area it is now.

He came to WA in 1894 and was licensee of the Bulong Hotel from 1898 to the time of his death, March 10, 1902. He was elected as a member of the Bulong Municipal Council, which position he held till his demise. He was a member of the Bulong A.W.A from its inception, and took a leading part in its affairs. He took a prominent position in all democratic movements, and died in his thirtieth year, sincerely esteemed by a host of comrades and friends.

Mike Logan sadly passed away in 2016. He was instrumental in campaigning to have the Bulong Cemetery fenced to prevent drivers and bike riders from using it. This was completed many years ago and remains as a legacy of his efforts. I remember him each time I visit the cemetery.

Hi Moya,
I have a photo of this headstone from a visit I made back in 2016. It’s laying flat but is still readable. Has this already been solved/disovered?
Hi Danelle Could you send em a copy?
